MINIATURE PASTEL PORTRAIT ~ LADY IN BLUE GOWN

This gorgeous, delicate, pencil and pastel portrait heightened with white is so subtly coloured that neither scanning nor photographing with digital camera will show the beauty to it's true extent.  The first image is scanned and too 'yellow' the subsequent images are digital camera and too pale!  The miniature is unsigned but on the reverse is 'John Downman' in pencil.  I cannot corroborate that this miniature is the hand of this famous miniaturist and portraitist, I can say that the execution is skilful and professional and I believe dates from late 18th / early 19th century.  Condition is excellent, there is a faint oval line showing where a previous frame covered the painting. (see picture).  I purchased this from the estate of a local Lady, the frame was very distressed and for the continued preservation of this lovely item I have had it professionally matted in acid free mat and framed in a good quality gilt frame.
